linksys wrt54g2 v1 with v24 sp2 does not repeat wireless signal

I have the above set and I'm trying to repeat an open (no wep/wap) signal from another acces point. The status page shows the wrt54 is connected to the other access point but no traffic passes through. I cleared the firewall settings and created a virtual ap. I can log onto the virtual ap wireless network and in turn the linksys repeater. On a laptop i can acccess the other wireless system no problem but when i connect through the vap and the repeater no internet traffic. Any ideas?
