Sorry,
Reopened for developers to confirm.

The connection speeds are also confirmed by ACTUAL bandwidth monitoring on a downloading computer, fluctuating constantly, EXTREMELY jagged in its graph, while Broadcom router was constantly d/l at about the same rate. Both connected to same set of AP on exact same channel.

Broadcom is not Atheros and visa versa. Broadcom does set the current transfer speed by signal rate, but on Atheros dd-wrt works different. the current rate is configured dynamicly, based on the current packet error rate. it always tries to find the optimal rate with best real world speed output. this will result in the effect that the current rate is higher, if no data is tranfered, and it can go down if data is transfered since the error rate can now be measured which is impossible without any data. we tested the current algorithm on a 30 km link and compared it to other producs. based on the experiences we got, we optimized it and we find that its currently almost optimal

I think this is standard operation, for dd-wrt to adjust the connection speed according to signal strength.
